Blue Mercat and Blue Sirene by Haruka-Tavares Blue Mercat and Blue Sirene by Haruka-Tavares
These enemies from The Undersea Caves are from Captain Claw game, the dialogues of the Mercat are hilarious, as every Claw player know. :lmao:

I was bored at school and I drew this pair of enemies that appears on level 12 (The Undersea Caves) of Captain Claw, but I was only able to finish the drawing today.

Blue Mercat and Blue Sirene (c) Monolith Productions/Captain Claw game

The undersea caves. Level 12. Boss Aquatris. I still play with the custom levels now! :D
I like the drawing, especially the way you coloured them.

I created these characters at monolith some 12 years or so years ago (I created most of the characters as well). These are very well done and representative of the original art I did. I think it's great people still love this game even though it has been out for so long.

:omg: You were one of the artists of Captain Claw? Oh my god! I'm so happy to listen the opinion of one of the official artists! :D Thank you! I love Captain Claw video game, it is still for me one of the best 2D Side-Scrolling Platformers I've ever played. I find the cinematics very well made, the voice cast chosen and everything. I got the game in 1999, the game was bundled with a Creative DVD reader. Could you tell me your name? For I can spot in the credits roll. :)

My name is Matt Hayhurst. I still have the original notebook that I did the concept work for Claw, as well as some large painted character studies of the main bosses (as well as a couple planned bosses from a never finished Claw 2). Also, a little known fact... the company that funded Claw (a Japanese company) made a really cool game book for it with manga versions of the characters and they did little statues of Katherine and Claw. Man it was a long time ago, but still one of my favorite projects I've worked on.

Hi!

I just learned of these statues of Katherine and Claw... any chance these were ever released? Or were they just prototypes?

Only 50 statues were made I believe, and I know the claw team bought a few, and a couple of those were broken. They were sold in a set of two. Very cool little maquettes, even though the captain Claw was way off model to his game version.
I still have mine.

Yeah, they were a bit "anime-ized", Katherine too. I just found the original designs for the characters, very nice work!

A lot of effort went into this game - the cutscenes are great too, I wish this was made into a cartoon. Heck, maybe if the game came out later when Pirates of the Caribbean made pirates popular again...

I guess there is little chance of finding the statues for sale then... still, if you ever hear about any ex-colleagues selling them, drop me a note! ;) I'd be interested. And thanks!

Yeah, no problem. Although, they were $200 for the 2. The only reason I bought them was that I designed Katherine. It may have been a little rich for my blood otherwise.

Heh, nice to make your aquintance then! :) I quite liked her looks in the game. Odd how different the japanese made her in the cover art/statue. She was more lynx-like originally.

Thanks for the name, I already saw it.

That's fantastic! I presume you are talking about Takarajimasha. :)

Yes, a sequel was planned but it got canceled after. I think in the end turned out a completely different 3D but still inspired in Claw.

I would love to watch your original drawings, since there were quite few concept arts around the internet of Captain Claw. That would be something that this fansite (the largest and the best one about Captain Claw, the Claw Recluse= would love to know about: [link] You can go check it out if you want. :)

Another reason about loving to watch your original drawings is because I'm studying Visual Arts in High School, and I already did a Drawing A exam, with a final result (average of the 3 years) 18/20 points. I want to become a Cartoonist in the future. ^^

Nice job ^^

I consider Claw as one of the best 2D games.
But I'm French, and I cannot understand yet all what characters say ^^;
And I'm still playing this game XD

Currently I'm locked in Level 9.
Just after the Save Point 1, I don't manage to reach the secret platform, even with the "mouse" power-up ><

Sounds cool, I will see ^^
